Why Teen Assertiveness Matters

Teen assertiveness is the skill every young person needs in times of crisis. In fact, nearly 60% of teenagers without clear boundaries face emotional manipulation. Therefore, for Ukrainian teens adjusting to a new country, this challenge can feel overwhelming.

At Six Foundation, we teach teens how to stand strong, set limits, and build confidence. As a result, they can protect themselves while forming healthy relationships.

How We Teach Teen Assertiveness

Creating safe spaces is essential. Moreover, teens have the opportunity to:

  • Understand themselves better
  • Build healthier relationships with family, peers, and community
  • Express their feelings in a supportive environment

In addition, we use art, improvisation, and interactive activities. These hands-on methods help teens practice skills in a fun and meaningful way.

Practicing Assertiveness in Action

Recently, our lesson focused on assertiveness for teens — the courage to express needs confidently, set respectful limits, and say “no” without guilt. Rather than just talking about it, teens experienced these skills through role-play.

For example, our teacher, Sonya, used improvisation to assign roles. Consequently, teens practiced setting boundaries in realistic situations. This method reinforces teen assertiveness in ways that last.

The Power of Practice

As a result, the room came alive. Teens could try, make mistakes, and grow in a safe environment. Furthermore, they learned that boundaries are not walls. Instead, boundaries are pathways to stronger and healthier relationships.

Moreover, these exercises help teens gain confidence step by step. They also remind everyone that courage grows stronger when shared in a supportive community.

Key Takeaways for Teens and Parents

Start small. For example, practice saying “no” in a safe space and notice how empowering it feels. Over time, practicing teen assertiveness builds lasting confidence, resilience, and the ability to handle challenges effectively.

Our Impact and Gratitude

We are deeply grateful to Sonya for leading this exercise with creativity and care. These moments of practice are where confidence begins. They remind us that growth happens step by step, and courage grows stronger when shared in a community.
